I found this gem of a program called HeroScribe online after my son and I started playing HeroQuest© together and he wanted to make his own quests.
While a great program, it didn't offer some of the key parts of a HeroQuest© quest that I thought it should, such as quest speech and notes.
So I decided to update the original HeroScribe!
Please feel free to contact me with any bugs, suggestions, or requests. jason@propvault.com
First, special thanks to http://lightless.org/heroscribe for all the hard work and effort put into
the original HeroScribe application (© 2003-2005 Flavio Chierichetti and Valerio Chierichetti).
HeroScribe Enhanced builds on their application, but has the same core functionality:
- It's a map editor for HeroQuest©
- It's written in Java and PostScript
- You can output files to PDF, EPS (postscript), or PNG image
- In order to export to PDF, you must install GNU Ghostscript
- It supports European and US formats of the game
- It requires the java Runtime Environment (JRE). Get it at http://www.java.com
- It includes every icon from HeroQuest©
New in HeroScribe Enhanced 1.01:
- I've included many export enhancements as follows:
- Export to PDF (high quality) will include the wandering monster icon and places the wandering monster text in a position more consistent with the original quest book
- Export to PDF (high quality) will now generate one page per board if a quest has multiple boards. Each page includes the quest text.
- *NEW* Export to PDF (low quality) will generate a pdf file without requiring Ghostscript. The image quality isn't as good, but if you are having issues with
the high quality export, this should be a good alternative.
- Export to PDF Thumbnail will generate the pdf the old way, with all boards together on one page.
- Export to EPS will now generate one page per board if a quest has multiple boards. Each page includes the quest text. Since technically EPS files are for use within other
programs, multiple page support may not work in all EPS viewers. GSView seems to handle the files ok.
- Added detailed error messages with exports to help track down any issues.
New in HeroScribe Enhanced 1.0:
- You can specify the wandering monster for a quest
- You can name your quest
- You can add quest speech to your quest (The speech you read the heroes before starting the quest)
- You can add QuestMaster notes to your quest (Notes about the quest that only the QuestMaster can read)
- All 3 export formats will include this new information
- Added an application icon
- Added several menu icons
- Added menu shortcuts
- Added a new preference to save a default directory when saving, opening, and exporting.
There are two downloads available:
- setup.exe (6.74 MB) is the Windows Installer
- HeroScribe.zip (6.81 MB) is the zipped application, ready to run. Just open the HeroScribe.jar file to run the program.
